If this is truly how Norton does things (I am sure it is not given the hoops they jumped through for Pinkston a few years ago) they are playing with fire.

I was told by one Appy athelete's parent who I went to school with that his son got a letter saying they can go to PV or Lee that's it. Since he live's in Keokee with his grandparents he said he is leaving the choice to his son, but has option to move in with him if he comes to Norton.
OK, this might be a dumb question, but ...

You said, the kid's grandparents live in Keokee...is their physical residence in Lee County? If so, that would explain why he would have the option to go either Lee or PV. Sounds to me like they live in Lee Co but he chose at some point in the past to go to Appy instead of Lee.

No that is not how Norton does things. Everything is taken care of well in advance and done the right way before anyone steps on the field and/or court.

Okay here is a question, people say you have to move inside the City limits to go to Norton, if this were true we wouldn't have many students at all. There are some who live just outside the City limits. You have Josephine, Thackers Branch, Guest River, Powell River, etc. Those places are not in the City limits but do have Norton, VA addresses.

So my question is this, you could currently have two neighbors in any of these communities (lets do Thackers Branch for example) with one going to Norton and one going to Wise. If this kid decides he doesn't want to go to Kelly anymore and wants to go to Norton is that okay????? He has a Norton address all along

I can see a lot of kids whom live on these outlying areas who go to say Appy or Kelly that may say I want to now go to Norton, would that be acceptable since they already have Norton, VA physical address?

Re: Appalachia, Powell Valley, and Football

VHSL, the issue with Keokee is where it's so far away from Lee High, that Wise co began running a bus to the county line back in the early 90's and those kids went to elementary and hiigh school in appalachia, sort of a de facto annexation, my wife's class of 94 she said 10 of those kids were from keokee at that time and a sister who did in 99 said closer to 30 were from that area.
UT is right being on the inside for many years there is no wink and nod thing done, Skeletor might be talking about the way the the county has let kids go from Pound to Kelly, but they do anything to screw us over when someone transfers in. Where ever you start the 9th grade at NO MATTER WHERE YOUR PHYISICAL RESIDENCE IS, is where you establish your eligibility for athletics in VA unless A you physically move with a parent, parents or guardian, B you transfer and sit out 365 days, C court mandates you live with another relative who is deemed the guardian.
Case in point back in 90 there was a boy who lived here played BB at Norton got mad at Stan he transferred to wise in his 10th grade and was eligible after half the semester (that was the old rule for a transfer) after his JR he came back to JIB for his SR year realized he made a mistake hated it up there and didn;t get to play any sports because he resided in Norton made his 1 move and when he came back would had to wait 365 days which he graduated.

It doesn't matter where their address is. Once you establish a school that you are going into the 9th grade of if you decide to transfer, to become immediately eligible to play sports you must also have a change of address. It doesn't matter if you were already within that schools area or not. If not, you must sit out 365 before you are eligible.

Gotcha, thanks. That was a little unclear to me. I also think it kinda sucks because say if you lived in Josephine which for those that don't know just outside corporation limits of Norton 1 mile from High School but you went to Appalachia. Now that the school closes you have to drive an extra few miles to get to PV instead of just transferring to Norton where you are much closer.

But this confuses me even more, to transfer to Norton you would have to have a change of address to a Norton address, is this correct?????? But what if you already have a Norton address but went to Appy. Ahhh this is all to crazy, just do away with the rule.

again, a KID can transfer anywhere, anytime. A VARSITY ATHLETE must sit 365 unless s/he "moves" or the school closes.
Now, a quick note on "moves"... must be a family move. Moving in with an aunt ot grampa don't cut it, unless they have custody thru the courts.
(another quick note... none of these rules apply if you wresrle for a state title team).

I see... maybe just the Lee Co. residents who are at Appy can get a rule waiver to be eligible at Lee... but not ALL Appy kids.

It doesnt necessarily have to be a Norton address, just a change of address thats shows the proof of a move.

Thanks, I am getting a little more clear understanding of it now. Comprehension wasn't one of my strongest attributes going through school.
